Case Study: Orbie’s Recovery Following a Traumatic Brain Injury

Overview

When Orbie, a mare who suffered a traumatic brain injury after being kicked in the head by another horse, lost the ability to chew and eat, her future was uncertain. While she retained her mobility and much of her neurological function, the inability to eat independently presented a life-threatening challenge.

Following the introduction of MagnaWave® PEMF therapy, Orbie’s owner observed an immediate attempt to eat after her first session. With continued daily treatments using a MagnaWave Semi 10, Orbie continued to improve over the next 75 days until she regained normal function.

Patient Information

Patient:Orbie, Thoroughbred, Mare, 13 Years Old

Presenting Condition:Traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from blunt-force trauma after being kicked in the head by another horse.

Primary Clinical Concern:Loss of the ability to chew and eat independently while maintaining the majority of normal neurological function.

The Challenge

Traumatic brain injuries can have lasting neurological effects and often require extensive supportive care while the body recovers. Although Orbie remained bright and otherwise functional, she was unable to chew or eat following the injury.

Her owner was searching for additional ways to support her recovery and decided to incorporate MagnaWave PEMF therapy into Orbie’s rehabilitation program.
To provide consistent treatment, MagnaWave supplied Orbie’s owner with a MagnaWave Semi 10PEMF machine for home use.

The Specifics

  • Machine: MagnaWave Semi 10
  • Frequency: 1–2 sessions per day
  • Session Length: 15–20 minutes
  • Primary Application: Wave Wings attachment applied to the head
  • Additional Therapy: Full-body MagnaWave session during each treatment

This protocol was followed consistently throughout Orbie’s recovery.

Early Response

Immediately following Orbie’s first MagnaWave session one day 25 post-injury, her owner noticed a significant change.

For the first time since her injury, Orbie began attempting to eat by licking and chewing.

Although she was not immediately able to resume normal eating, this marked an encouraging milestone and gave her owner hope that recovery was possible.

Progress Over Time

With consistent daily PEMF sessions, Orbie continued showing gradual improvement.

Over the following weeks, her ability to chew improved, and she steadily regained normal eating and drinking function. As her recovery progressed, her owner continued treating both her head and entire body using the established protocol.

After 75 days of consistent MagnaWave sessions, Orbie had made a full recovery.

Outcome

At the conclusion of her recovery:

    • Normal eating ability restored
    • Returned to normal function
    • Successfully recovered following traumatic brain injury

While every injury and every horse is different, Orbie’s case demonstrates the potential value of incorporating PEMF therapy as part of a comprehensive recovery program.

Owner Perspective

Orbie’s owner described the experience in powerful terms:
“I truly believe MagnaWave saved Orbie’s life.”
As Orbie continued to improve throughout her rehabilitation, her owner reflected:
“This is the most incredible thing I think I’ve ever witnessed.”

Discussion

PEMF therapy is commonly used to support the body’s natural recovery processes by promoting healthy circulation and supporting the normal inflammatory response following physical stress or injury.

In Orbie’s case, we believe consistent MagnaWave sessions may have helped support her body’s recovery following traumatic brain injury. While it is impossible to determine the contribution of any single therapy, the timing of her initial response, followed by steady improvement over the next 75 days, makes this a noteworthy case.
Further research is needed to better understand the role PEMF therapy may play in supporting recovery following neurological trauma.
